On 24 May 2025, Yeastside Farrer Park came alive as “What’s in THEFRIDGE? Nara Brewing Co.” celebrated the bold debut of Japan’s trailblazing Nara Brewing Co. on Singapore soil for the very first time. 

Founded in the historic city of Nara, Japan — Nara Brewing Co., brings a modern approach to traditional brewing values. They're known for their clean, expressive beers and elegant, minimal can design. A cult favourite in Japan, they're making their Singapore debut at this event.

Meet the Brewer: Yasunori Namioka

After founding Nara Brewing in 2017 and securing his licence in 2018, head brewer Yasunori Namioka spent the following years perfecting recipes that balance approachability with depth—earning a devoted following in Japan. Namioka-san curated six standout beers for the debut showcase—deliberately skipping an IPA—to spotlight the full breadth of his brewing mastery.

Our Showcase Lineup

1. Daylong (German Pilsner)
    Widely regarded as the easiest-drinking beer in the lineup, Daylong’s crisp malt backbone and gentle bitterness make it the perfect opening pour. Nara Brewing fans in Japan have already seen Daylong fly off shelves, so try this one first.
2. Purpletown (Fruit Sour Ale)
    This vibrant sour is crafted with a blend of lactobacillus and Brettanomyces, plus a touch of star anise for a subtle spicy finish. Its juicy acidity dances on the palate—just don’t blink, because both Purpletown and Daylong have sold out back home.
3. Lighthouse (Micro Porter)
   Namioka-san loves beer but prefers low-alcohol styles for extended enjoyment. Lighthouse is his answer: a roasted, chocolatey porter at a sessionable ABV that invites you to linger over glass after glass.
4. Both Hands (Golden Stout Collaboration)
   A rare collab with Kyoto Brewing Co.—one of Japan’s most celebrated breweries—Both Hands is a golden stout brewed with locally roasted coffee beans. It melds stout-like depth with bright, coffee-forward notes, showcasing true cross-brewery craftsmanship.
5. Function (American-Belgo Style Ale)
   Yasunori-san brewed it to spark conversation—each sip balances gentle Belgian-yeast esters with a clean, lingering bitterness and a slightly dry finish. Imagine white-grape sweetness dancing with tropical fruit notes of mango and lychee—Function is the perfect bridge between Japanese precision and American hop adventure.
   
6. Underwater (Sake Yeast Beer Collaboration)
   a delightful collab with Kaze no Mori from Gose City, which opened with juicy, strawberry-like aromas and then glided into a crisp, dry finish with just a whisper of creamy tang—an unforgettable fusion of beer and sake.

Highlights from the Night

Guests kicked off the evening with four signature pours on tap—Daylong, Purpletown, Lighthouse, and Both Hands—then took home four Nara Brewing beers in cans, including two exclusive can-only releases: Underwater (sold out on the night itself!) and Function. Midway through, head brewer Yasunori Namioka joined via live video for a brief introduction to his brewing philosophy, walking us through the inspiration behind each recipe and those sleek minimalist can designs.
